Interclub Nationals 2001--First Place!!!

1998 Nationals Review

The 1998 Interclub Nationals were held at Cottage Park YC in Winthop Mass. April 18-19. Measurement began Friday afternoon in the pouring rain and was finished up Saturday morning. A special thanks goes to John Pratt and his measurement team.

The sailing on Saturday was postponed for an hour due to a gusty northerly. The breeze moderated slightly and 58 ICs made it out to the racecourse just before noon.

All eight of the races were windward leeward courses with the start/finish in the middle.

The first race proved the left side of the first beat the place to be. We rounded the weather mark second and quickly lost six boats to the inside of us because of a puff that passed to leeward. We finished upwind in 8th place.

The second race was our drop. What can I say, we missed a shift or two. We did learn that the left side of the course on the last leg could be a scary place. Adam Walsh and Mike Breault rounded the leeward mark 8 boat lengths ahead of us and immediately tacked to the right side of the course. They ended up third while we were 21st.

The third race was started in a left shift and we tacked off the line on to port at the gun. We were then free to sail the shifts without any obstacles and we ended up winning that race.

The fourth race was started in a left shift but this time the breeze was up, 20 knots or so. We had a hard time maneuvering before the start so we ended up second row towards the pin. We managed to tack on to port and duck a few boats to get free. This was enough to get us back in the front row, allowing us to play the remainder of the shifts and finish 4th.

The fifth race was started in a small right shift that was followed by strong left shift. We managed to get to the left shift first and finish first.

The sixth race is kind of a blur other than vivid images of our vang breaking at the eye strap behind the mast step. Sailing an Interclub with no vang is rather exciting in a gusty northerly. We managed to hang on to finish 7th. We made a quick fix between races and immediately started race seven. We started in a left shift that changed into a large right shift. All we could do is to ride out the righty and wait for some kind of a left shift. The lefty came through and we rounded in 4th. One boat passed us on the last beat and we finished 5th.

After the first day of racing we were a close second behind Ed Adams and Carol Newman. They had 21 points and we had 26.

Sunday was postponed due to a lack of wind but after 45 minutes we headed out to the starting area. The wind filled in just enough to start race eight. We started in the middle of the line where the most breeze was and managed to stay away from any big holes. We rounded the first mark in 3rd and Ed and Carol were no where in sight. The breeze dropped to almost nothing for a short time on the run and we lost a hand full of boats to the left of us. At the leeward mark we were 6th, and that is were we ended up in that race. Ed and Carol were 15th. We never saw enough breeze to start another race so the committee called it off at about 12:30.

We won the regatta with 32 points and Ed and Carol had 36.

I would like to thank my teammate Samantha Resonant for her ability to adapt quickly to an IC and for her unequaled desire to win. We would both like to thank Cottage Park Yacht Club and everyone involved for running a superb event.

Shore Sails were used on 13 of the top 15 boats and the competition at this regatta was tough.
