Shore sailmakers have taken time to evaluate the go-fast elements of the J 27. The mast section is flexible fore and aft. Since it is a fractional rig, the headstay sag and mast bend are the keys to successful rig set-up. The lower shrouds must be set-up very tight to restrict the bend in the lower part of the mast. As the backstay is tensioned, the lower section of the mast remains straight, the top of the mast bends and the headstay becomes tighter. The bend in the top of the mast flattens the head of the mainsail, allowing the upper leech to twist open and depower the main. Tensioning the headstay flattens the entry of the headsail for depowering, which improves pointing.

The Shore sail designs for the J 27 are very fast, forgiving to steer and durable. In comparison to many other J 27 sails, the Shore main is flatter down-low and fuller up-high. Our headsails are draft forward with a straighter exit. These design shapes work extremely well on the J 27 because it is a narrow, easily driven fractional rig boat with a narrow sheeting angle. The sails are adjustable to cover a wide range of conditions.

Our Kevlar 49 material and glued seam technology offer a big advantage for the J 27 where the one-design sail inventory is limited to four sails. The sails need to cover a wide wind range.

The Spider headsails have a draft forward and flat exit shape which is adjustable. As the wind builds, the sail is flattened by sliding the lead car aft, adding backstay tension and sheeting harder. The low-stretch material and construction keep the sail from becoming deep as the wind builds.

The AP Spider Spinnaker uses our stepped-corner reinforcement to keep the sail light weight in the corners for use in the lightest of wind while maintaining strength for higher wind uses. The sail provides a powerful downwind shape and projects maximum sail when running. It is the fastest reaching spinnaker in the class, as well.
