The concept for this boat evolved from a Friday after-work conversation over a bottle of wine between Bill Shore and Bob Johnstone. Rod Johnstone then did the design work to make it successful. The question was whether the J 30 could do well in PHRF racing. The answer was a lightweight, fast J 29 with Shore Sails. In the early days of PHRF, overall length played a large role in performance, so it was thought that a slightly shorter, but lighter boat could out perform its competition.
Bill and Bob developed a strategy to test their theory, giving birth to the popular J 29 and its hugely successful Shore Sails inventory. The boat was built, an owner without name recognition was identified and a PHRF rating was applied for in three areas. That summer, Bill and Bob campaigned the boat in the area with the best rating, winning everything for the owner, as well as a huge following for both the boat and its fast sails.
