A year before the design of the J 35, Bob Johnstone and Bill Shore conceptualized the winning J 29 design based on shortening the J 30 to take advantage of opportunities in the rating rule. The J 35 evolved from a similar need to maximize the performance of a slightly larger boat, the J 36. Rod Johnstone designed the hugely popular boat.

For many years, the J 35 has been the best boat-for-boat racer available in the offshore market. The J 35 is relatively affordable, has a limited sail inventory, is stable and fast, is comfortable, is exciting to race and has a healthy class structure.

Shore Sails contributes its insights for design of one-design sails to the J 35 class, building one of the most successful sail inventories available to racing sailors.
