 Karl Ziegler

Sonars in the News

Competitors choosing Shore Sonar sails dominated the 1999 Sonar North American Championship hosted by Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA.  Karl Ziegler with his father, William Ziegler III and SSCT’s Tom Kinney as part of the crew, crushed the 45-boat fleet using good upwind speed and outstanding downwind speed to post finishes of 2,2,4,2,15.  Class newcomer Mason Woodworth with SSRI’s Randy Shore, and Dean Brenner as crew, nearly completed a Shore 1-2 sweep, but slipped from 4th to 11th in the final race to place 4th overall.

Earlier in the season, SSCT customer, Steve Shepstone ran away with the first annual Tappan Zee Challenge against the best of the competition’s customers.  Shepstone’s finishes of 1,2,1,2,3 allowed him to sit out the final race.  Shepstone just missed making it two wins in a row, loosing first place in this year’s New England Championship to a tiebreaker.

Following the Sonar NAs, Mason Woodworth, Randy Shore, and Dean Brenner went on to win the Prince of Wales Trophy for the prestigious US SAILING Match Racing Championship hosted in Sonars by St. Petersburg YC.  Shore Sails’ Andy Horton, the 1999 Lightning North American Champion and winner of the 1999 Pan Am Games in Lightnings, placed second to give the Shore team another 1-2 finish.
